Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling can be traced to the 12th century. In 1495, "bowles" was explicitly mentioned in a list of unlawful games by Henry the VII. In the Unlawful Games Act of 1541 (which wasn't repealed until 1845!), artificers, labourers, apprentices, servants and the like were forbidden to play bowls at any time except Christmas, and then only in their master's house and presence.
